Abstract

The existence of Goong Rénténg in the midst of the dynamic development of a society that is slowly
detaching itself from the position, role and function of Goong Rénténg, raises the consequence of the
fading existence of Goong Rénténg itself. On the other hand, there was an event where the community
initiated a "new" cultural event involving Goong Rénténg in the form of a festival that previously had no
correlation with the role and function of Goong Rénténg. This led to the transformation of Goong Rénténg
from sacred to profane, from rite to entertainment. In addition, the participation of the generation that
continues the existence of Goong Rénténg has a significant role, in other words, there is an effective
inculturation process from the awareness of the younger generation of Cirebon on efforts to preserve
traditional arts. This study focuses on the formulation of the relationship between the existence of
festivals initiated by the younger generation of Cirebon with the transformation of sacred profane goong
rénténg in West Java.
