Arby Samah has been regarded as a pioneer in the history of abstract sculpture in Indonesia since he studied at ASRI Yogyakarta in 1957. In this period, Arby Samah created non-figurative sculptures whose style was new and unusual compared with his contemporaries in Yogyakarta. Abstract shape is believed to be confusing to many since it seems to have little relation to real life. Arby Samah took a long and complex path to produce an abstract sculpture. To him, finding a new form is a historical finding in the development of sculptural art. Arby Samah’s journey in the art of sculpture is not consistent to the fame that he has received. It has a correlation with his desire to develop fine arts, especially sculpture in West Sumatera, where the art is rather poorly developed due to the influences of custom and religion. Arby Samah wants his artworks to give an understanding to the public regarding arts, and to eliminate the public perception of sculpture as a form of idolatry. The West Sumatra people’s perception of sculpture as a form of idolatry will be discussed from the beginning of such notion, the coming of Islam to West Sumatra, until the reception of sculptural art by West Sumatra people
