Abstract

Each city is a collection of life and buildings, which has its own personality. Each city has a state of mind,
a personality, has a certain mood or sentiment, which reflects the 'personality' of the city. Firstly, this has
to do with the constellation of buildings; with the shape of the buildings, infrastructure and superstructure
of each city. Second, the 'personality' of a city has to do with the way its residents live their lives in the city,
with their culture and habits. Assuming that each city has a distinctive state of mind or personality, these
urban experiences might be considered the 'feeling structure' of the city. The city's 'feeling structure' must
be understood as a processual area, in a state of in-making; it can also be something that is artificial,
contradictory, mobile, changing and constantly changing. Viewed from the perspective of urban cultural
studies, aesthetic expression can be understood as a way of embodying urban 'feeling structures', which
are revealed through the exploration of various cultural phenomena and imagination. From this position,
the meaning of 'urban aesthetics' can become the second face of the reality of the city itself, as a space of
transition, vulnerability and uncertainty. The working method of 'urban aesthetics' is essentially a method
of disalienation, a way of trying to reclaim living space from its concealment, which has produced the effect
of alienating the conceptualized space. Placing “art as a function of urban disalienation” means reuniting
aesthetics with urban phenomena. This is what the exploration of the idea of 'urban aesthetics' offers.
Keywords: city 'personality', city 'feeling structure', disalienation method
