Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end of the document.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Template.
  • The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed. See also specific instructions for Word on removing personal information from documents.
  • The submission file size does not exceed 8 MB. Decreasing the size of e.g. a Microsoft Word document can be done by decreasing the resolution of the photos or changing the file format of the photos used, using a photo editing software like Photoshop or the freeware GIMP.
  •  The author/s confirm that all relevant research ethics assessments have been made of the manuscript, and are willing to account for this upon request. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.

Author Guidelines

Unless otherwise noted on the website, CAIJ welcomes article submissions at any time.

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all the following criteria. Submissions may be returned to authors who do not adhere to these guidelines or automatically rejected in cases where these guidelines have been largely disregarded:

  • Written manuscripts should be in American English.
    • Authors who do not speak English as their first language should enlist the support of an editor to ensure the document clearly conveys the author’s intended meanings prior to submitting the manuscript for review.
  • All submissions must be original works that have not been previously published and are not under consideration elsewhere.
  • All manuscripts should include the following elements:
    • An abstract of 100—150 words, plus 5-7 keywords for searches relevant to your topic.
    • A reference list of all in-text citations. Refer to the style and formatting guidelines linked below for additional details.
    • AI Usage Disclosure Statement (if applicable). A generative artificial intelligence (AI) disclosure statement should be included at the end of the text and before the Reference List; please include this even if you only used AI for grammar/spelling assistance or literature searches. Please consider this statement as an opportunity to be fully transparent to build trustworthiness with your reader.
  • There is no page limit to submissions; however, the following word count limits do apply:
    • 4,000-6,000 words for feature articles, lived aesthetic inquiries, and literature reviews
    • 2,000-3,000 words for book and media reviews
    • Abstracts and keywords do count towards these limits; text included in reference lists, tables, or figures does not.
  • Submissions must follow the style and formatting guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA 7th edition).
    • Detailed explanations of APA style can be found at https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines.
    • Sample papers and templates can be found at https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/sample-papers. Be sure to reference examples for professional papers only.
    • Proper formatting must be applied to all elements of the manuscript, including parenthetical citations, the reference list, and any tables or figures.
    • Authors should enlist the assistance of an editor to ensure the document is formatted completely using this style prior to submission. Authors who take care to do this generally have greater success navigating peer-review.
  • Submission files should be Microsoft Word .docx files and include necessary accessibility features.
    • PDFs are NOT acceptable.
    • Utilization of graphics, photographs, video streaming, as well as other technologies are welcome. However, all visual elements appearing in accepted manuscripts must comply with U.S. copyright laws. Writers will be asked to obtain permission for IJEA to publish copyrighted photographs, illustrations, or images.
    • Any supplemental files should be in Microsoft Word (.docx), .jpeg, .gif, .flw, .mp3, .mp4, .mov, or Excel (.xlsx) format.
    • Figure and table: Requires a caption and alternative text (alt text). Please see these Writing Alt Text: Guidelines for Authors, or Write Helpful Alt Text to Describe Images for instructions.
    • Pre-recorded Video with Audio: Requires synchronized captions (text for speech and sounds) and a transcript (full text equivalent of all audio and visual content).
    • Video Only: Requires a transcript or an audio track describing the visual content.
    • Audio Only: Requires a transcript.
  • All manuscripts must be fully anonymous. Please follow the following steps to ensure a double-blind review:
    • Create a separate title page file to supply complete contact information for all authors.
      • Include all authors’ names, institutions/affiliations, complete street addresses, e-mail addresses, phone and/or numbers (please see the Title Page Template).
      • Clearly indicate the first-named author or the co-author who will be handling the correspondence and clearing galleys with the editors and associate editors.
      • Please ensure that the title page is a separate file from the anonymized manuscript to avoid delays in forwarding your manuscript to the assigned editor for initial review.
    • Remove all authors’ names from the manuscript file.
      • Any information in the text or references that would identify the author should be deleted from the manuscript, including any in-text citations, reference list entries, and tables or figures.
      • As a placeholder, you may replace in-text citations with generic descriptors, such as (Author, 2022) or (Author 1 & Author 2, 2016) or (Author 3 et al., 2021). Reference list entries can be replaced with a notation similar to this: [Author 1; redacted for review].
      • Any details removed for the purpose of ensuring anonymity during review may be reinserted in the final draft.
    • Remove any identifying information from the document’s Properties.
      • Open your document in Microsoft Word, navigate the menu to File >> Properties >> Summary, and remove any author or institution names from the information fields as needed.
  • Additional Style & Formatting Considerations
    • Notes should be typed as footnotes using MS Word footnote function and should be numbered consecutively throughout the article. Citations should not be included as footnotes, rather directly in the text using parentheses.
    • A reference list contains only references that are cited in the text. Its accuracy and completeness are the responsibility of the author(s). Personal communications (letters, memos, telephone conversations) are cited in the text after the name with as exact a date as possible. (NB. Personal communications are not cited in the reference list.) Please do not use space bar or hard return (Enter) to format the reference.
    • Tables, Figures, Illustrations, & Other Technologies. The purpose of tables and figures is to present data to the reader in a clear and unambiguous manner. The author should not describe the data in the text in such detail that illustration or text is redundant. Utilization of graphics, photographs, video streaming, as well as other technologies are welcome. The images may be embedded in the initial submission. However, in addition to the embedded images, all graphics and photographs must be sent in jpeg or gif format in the final accepted version for publishing. If an image is embedded in the text, indicate the corresponding name of the .jpeg (i.e., Insert Image 1, [name of image] here.
    • Once an article has been accepted, all tables, figures, illustrations and audio/video files along with the corresponding alternative text should be e-mailed to the assigned associate editor along with the manuscript and an author bio of no more than 100 words.
